Absolute Superman #1 soars into DC's new continuity with a gripping origin story that redefines the Last Son of Krypton for a new era, blending social commentary with superhero action.
What if Superman's iconic "S" symbol represented something more complex than "hope"? DC's Absolute Universe aims to answer that question and more, reimagining the Man of Steel through a darker, more grounded lens. DC has been killing it lately with its new Absolute Universe initiative, and I’ve been locked in on seeing whatever the major publisher puts out next. With Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman both being banger introductions to new stories, expectations are sky-high for Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval's take on the world’s most iconic superhero. Does Absolute Superman #1 live up to the hype? Let’s dive in and find out!
Overview of Absolute Superman #1
In the depths of a Brazilian mining favela, workers labor under the iron grip of Lazarus Corp’s Peacemakers. Unknown to them, an alien with extraordinary powers lives within their troubled community. However, as tensions reach a boiling point, Superman makes his presence known to defend the people who sheltered him. Yet, sinister forces loom, plotting to stop the Kryptonian before he fully embraces his destiny as a hero.
Review
As I’ve been closely following the growth of DC’s Absolute Universe, I come into each new title thinking: How differently will they spin this one? In Absolute Superman #1, that twist begins with Krypton itself. The issue opens with a starkly different portrayal of Superman’s home world, where society is deeply divided by class. Here, Superman’s iconic “S” symbol is no longer a mark of hope but instead signifies Krypton’s lower class—a fundamental change that sets the stage for a reimagined Superman with entirely new motivations.
Jason Aaron does a stellar job establishing Superman’s roots, painting him as a character shaped by both privilege and oppression. This duality gives Kal-El a complex reason to fight against injustice and makes his journey on Earth all the more intriguing.
Absolute Superman #1 is essentially split into two parts. The first half introduces Kal-El’s origins and his current life in Brazil, while the second half explodes into action as Superman battles an army of Lazarus Corp’s Peacemakers. This issue strikes a satisfying balance, delivering both character-driven moments and thrilling action. Artist Rafa Sandoval’s visuals are stunning throughout, capturing the emotional weight of Kal-El’s journey and the explosive intensity of the battle scenes, especially as Superman begins to come into his powers. Watching him grow stronger, both in ability and character, promises an exciting journey ahead.
In a way, Absolute Superman surprisingly reminds me of Bendis’ seminal run on Ultimate Spider-Man. This version of Superman is younger, more brash, and far more headstrong than we’re used to, making the character feel fresh yet recognizable. While Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman also depict younger versions of these heroes, the change feels particularly pronounced here. Seeing a more reckless and unpolished Superman—usually the epitome of control—adds a fascinating layer to his character.
Final Thoughts
Absolute Superman #1 offers a promising start to a bold reimagining of the Man of Steel. This issue recontextualizes Superman’s journey from Krypton to Earth, blending familiar elements with new, thoughtful changes. With so much potential set up in this first issue, I’m eager to see how this Superman continues to develop in the Absolute Universe. DC continues its streak of delivering a killer lineup for its Absolute Universe, and the future is looking very bright for this bold new initiative.
