April is looking a bit light in terms of new #1s, but some still catch my eye. Mad Cave Studios’ Buried Long, Long Ago looks like it could satisfy those crazing for a new horror story to dive into. Then Oni Press’ new Nacelleverse comic, The Great Garloo #0, also has me curious to see where they take the story next.

While publishers like Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly are staples within the trade paperback space, Vault Comics is also making an intriguing new push this April. With Vault Books, the publisher is shifting from comics to more Japanese light novels. As someone who loves a good light novel, I’m excited to see more of this new initiative. Looking at the lineup they have cooking up, it looks like readers are in store for a wide variety of new books to choose from.

Keep an eye out for Mad Cave Studios come April. A bunch of their miniseries, including Synap and The Hexiles, are coming to a close. So if you’re the type who loves diving into quick and self-contained comics, now is the best time to start catching up on what the growing publisher has been putting out lately! Mad Cave continues to be a publisher to watch, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

Other than them, Oni Press and Ahoy Comics also have plenty of promising ongoing comics to check out. Oni’s Cruel Kingdom really impressed me with its first haunting issue. I can’t wait to see more of it, and April will mark the end of the first series. As someone more of an Image Comics-head, I still love branching out to the much smaller publishers because of the variety they offer to my monthly pulls.
