Writer Zack Kaplan is quickly becoming a comic book creator to watch out for. With comics like the highly ambitious Beyond Real under his belt, he’s shown that he’s got plenty of wild ideas to explore. His new series from Dark Horse Comics, boldly named Kill All Immortals, is his take on a brutal story about a family of immortals using their powers to influence society. With artist Fico Ossio, Kaplan brings to life an exciting and promising start to a new series that blends modern action with Norse mythology.

Overview

Frey Asvald is not like most billionaires. As the daughter of Erik Asvald, one of the world’s richest businessmen, Frey prefers to distance herself from the family business and focus more on philanthropic pursuits. But all that changes after she’s attacked during one of her excursions. So she turns to her family for answers and protection. Unfortunately for Frey, the Asvald family’s long history of violence comes crashing down on her in an instant, forcing her to make bold decisions to save her partner’s life.

Review

The solicitation of Kill All Immortals describes it as “Succession meets John Wick.” Now, as absurd as that combination may sound, it’s a surprisingly pinpoint accurate description coming from its promising first issue. The comic starts hot with a bloody action scene that has thugs getting torn apart by mythical weaponry. But after the dust clears, Kill All Immortals #1 settles into building up the story’s intense family drama filled with intriguing characters. At the center of it all is Frey, a strong, stylish, and mysterious woman with a heart of gold. Her altruistic personality makes for a good contrast against her more violent siblings. While this first issue only scratches the surface of her story, Frey immediately feels like a unique heroine you want to know more about.

However, the thing about this first issue is that it's much lighter on action than I expected. With such a striking title as “Kill All Immortals,” a part of me came into it thinking it would be a bloodbath from start to finish. Instead, the comic spends more time establishing the world, characters, and their violent dynamics together. As someone who loves character-driven narratives, it was great to see this comic take its time to build up the story’s major players. And even though the comic’s big twist about Frey’s family is a bit predictable, the issue ends on an exciting note that sets the stage for the comic to start getting into the real meat of its story. Heads are going to start rolling from here, and I’m very excited to see Frey start throwing down against the other characters. So, if you’re a fan of stories like the God of War franchise, Kill All Immortals is a comic you’ll want to check out.

On the visual side of things, artist Fico Ossio does great work bringing the fascinating cast of characters to life. With their striking tattoos and bold outfits, the entire Asvald family all look like they are dressed to kill. The eye-catching character designs help give the comic a very distinct flair that’s a joy to look at. Then, from the sprinkles of action that we see from this issue, the paneling and choreography of the scenes look smooth, visceral, and impactful. This first issue delivers on giving a great preview of the wild ride it will be like when we start seeing Frey battle against her family and whatever tricks they have in store for her.

Final Thoughts

Kill All Immortals kicks things off with a compelling first issue that lays the groundwork for a sprawling and violent story to unfold. This issue does enough to get you up to speed on the main characters and the history of violence that ties them together. While I expected a little bit more action to help set the tone of the series, the violent moments in this issue still offer a great look into what’s to come. Don’t miss out on this promising new series from creators with plenty of fresh stories to tell.

Why You Should Read Kill All Immortals

  • Fico Ossio’s art brings to life a world of styling and powerful characters.
  • With the core premise of the story set up, the series is primed to get crazier from here.
