Kill Me, Please delivers a sensational story readers will find pleasing. With an intriguing premise, lively dialogue, and engaging characters, this series stands out among many webtoons within the historical fantasy genre.

WEBTOON offers a huge selection of CANVAS titles, ranging from newly published works to those that have been enjoyed for years. With so many options, attracting readers can be challenging, and obtaining a large subscriber base may take a long time. However, it took only a few months for one particular creator and their series to achieve notable status. Kill Me, Please by creator the-eve first released in February has since amassed an impressive 120k subscribers already. What is it about this series that has garnered such a large following so quickly? I’m here to dive in and find out. Keep on reading for my take on this historical fantasy webtoon!

Overview

Ronan Lois Arnaudet was the daughter of a baron. Since her social debut, she caught the eyes of many suitors. However, over two years, she would turn down every man who tried to court her. But when her father finds himself in deep financial trouble, marriage becomes inescapable for Ronan. She is then forced to marry an old widow more than twice her age to help pay off her family’s debt. With no other choice, Ronan miserably accepts her fate. That is until a mysterious cursed man offers her a different path. He’ll solve all her problems if she can do only one thing: kill him.

Review

Right away the series opens with a grim and dramatic prologue that ends in a hopeful cliffhanger and title drop. The first couple of episodes do a beautiful job of setting up the webtoon’s enchanting story. The intriguing introduction of the plot and its characters hints at deeper mysteries to come, which simply draws you in. The flow of the narrative is smooth and the pacing I found to be perfect. The series has a clean webtoon format and polished panel transitions of one scene moving to the next. There are hardly any moments of confusion in the story’s execution, which makes for an uninterrupted read.

The fun starts with it being a historical romance fantasy webtoon about a contract marriage, where the cursed male lead asks the female lead to kill him rather than save him. The plot is similar to general rofan themes to pique the interest of readers but different enough to keep them engaged for the entirety of the story. While there are some cliches (such as the line “don’t fall in love with me”), they are seamlessly folded into the narrative and it barely feels too much or cringeworthy. It’s a fresh take on a common trend, and creator the-eve makes it stand out brilliantly among similar titles. I found myself quickly reading each episode before realizing how deep I already was into the story.

Besides the plot, I am quite fond of the hilarious banter in Kill Me, Please. There are great dynamics between the characters that make the story so engaging to follow. Ronan is likable as the female lead. She is independent, in that she does what she wants but is still considerate of others. She is smart and has common sense as a person, a trait many fictional characters seem to lack for the sake of plot progression. Alden then makes for an intriguing male lead. Even though so much of it is shrouded in mystery, he often reveals his kind and considerate personality. While their first encounter starts rocky with Alden essentially forcing Ronan to marry him, their relationship develops very well as the story progresses. With Alden being rich and Ronan financially struggling, you would normally think there to be a difference in power dynamics. But the story always treats them to be on equal footing, showing how Alden needs Ronan as much as she needs him. When both parties make demands, there is a level of respect between them that feels natural to their characters. From that, I would go as far as to say that Alden is one of the less toxic male leads I’ve encountered in the many rofans I’ve read.

Besides the two leads, the webtoon gets very in-depth with building side characters and making them just as crucial to the story. Gilbert, Alden’s servant, has been revealed as an integral part of Alden’s character. Their interaction has also been entertaining to read and a deeper exploration into side characters like Gilbert would surely add more depth to the story. All in all, every character feels fleshed out despite the current minimal information/backstory on some of them.

Final Thoughts

Kill Me, Please has been quite a fun series to immerse myself in. Besides the occasional 3D background that I felt looked awkward, the series has been a pleasant read. Its plot will have you wondering how it’ll end. I hope the creator gives Kill Me, Please a Me Before You by Jojo Moyes type of ending. It would hurt a lot of readers, and they may hate it because people generally love happy endings, but I think such a direction would elevate the story as a whole. Regardless, I look forward to more of this series. If you aren’t already among the many readers of Kill Me, Please yet, this is your cue to join the mass today!
