Nights kicks off Season 2 with an exciting and fun flashback arc that delves into the younger days of Gray and Tsukumari. While this issue reads more like a supernatural spy thriller, it still maintains the fun and charm that makes the series such an incredible read.
Hot off the heels of its Season 1 finale, Nights is set to kick off its second season this February with an intriguing flashback story focusing on Tsukumari's younger days at Chimera. Set in the 1970s, the new story arc explores how the mysterious agent crossed paths with Gray alongside her magical ex, Erik. Image Comics was kind enough to send us an early review copy, and as a longtime fan of this series, I couldn’t wait to dive in. Full of surprises as always, Nights #13 takes us on a supernatural spy adventure that expands the series in exciting ways. Keep on reading for my full review!
Overview
Following the events of last season's exciting finale, Nights #13 turns the clock back to the 1970s. The new issue follows rookie Chimera agent Tsukumari as he investigates supernatural oddities across the world–from the blistering cold of Estonia to the decadent sands of Las Vegas. This journey leads Tsukumari on a collision course with a certain vampire girl, setting off a chain of events with ripple effects across decades.
Review
As you can expect from Nights, issue #13 has a little bit of everything packed into it: action, comedy, supernatural suspense, and fantastic world-building. By shedding new light on Tsukumari’s past, this issue adds a new dimension to a character who has remained largely a mystery since the early parts of the series. Seeing a younger, more ruthless, and less refined version of Tsukumari on his early Chimera missions is a treat and I can’t wait to see more as the arc progresses.
The espionage-style storytelling brings a different energy to Nights, making this issue feel more like a supernatural spy thriller. But even with the greater focus on action and suspense, the series' signature playfulness and sharp character dynamics remain intact. As always, Wyatt Kennedy and Luigi Formisano sprinkle in rich lore throughout the issue, making the world of Nights feel even more expansive than ever. Learning more about Tsukumari’s history with Chimera and their connection to Gray adds a compelling new layer to the comic’s overarching narrative, reinforcing just how well-crafted this world is.
Visually, Luigi Formisano and Francesco Segala continue to be an incredible combo for the series. Their depiction of the 1970s is unique, with every scene–from a quaint home in Estonia to the parties in Las Vegas–rendered in great detail. A nice touch also is seeing some familiar characters designed with 70s flair, making the flashback setting all the more fun for the new arc. It makes this new story feel so much more distinct from the main story involving Vince in present times.
With that said, I feel the only downside about this issue (and the coming arc) is that it’s such a drastic shift away from Vince and the present-day storyline. That means we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what happens next for the rest of the gang after Season 1’s big cliffhangers. However, I still remain excited about this flashback arc because of how it offers new looks into the characters and the comic’s interesting world, which sets up intriguing developments for the future.
Final Thoughts
Nights #13 is a strong start to the series' second season, offering a fresh look at familiar characters while expanding the scope of the comic’s supernatural world. It will be fun seeing more of the 1970s setting as the arc goes along. The flashback arc adds much-needed backstory to Tsukumari and Gray, enriching their relationship while further fleshing out some of the mystery swirling around Chimera.
With the spotlight on Tsukumari and Gray, this arc promises major revelations, enriching the characters and their complex relationships. The creative team of Wyatt Kennedy and Luigi Formisano continues to impress, proving that Nights remains one of Image Comics' most unpredictable and exciting ongoing series. If this issue is any indication, Season 2 is going to be one filled with mystery and supernatural shenanigans.
