Daniel Warren Johnson Shares NYCC Sketches, Recap, and Updates

I was surprised to find out Daniel Warren Johnson only recently started his Substack despite being one of today's most popular comic book creators. However, he did pick the perfect time to start a newsletter. Not only did his highly-anticipated Transformers comic finally release, which he talks about in an earlier post, but he also had a wonderful showing at New York Comic Con a few weeks back.

In his latest post, DWJ recaps his trip to NYCC, showing off signings and a collection of slick sketches he did over the weekend. Of course, many of these sketches featured the Transformers, with my personal favorite being the one with Optimus Prime hitting Megatron with a suplex. Transformers and pro wrestling will always be a killer combo.

At the end of his post, DWJ talks about his upcoming trip to Japan and content plans for the Substack. It’s looking like now is the perfect time to subscribe because a ton of updates and posts are coming in the next few weeks!

Cullen Bunn continues to be one of the hardest-working creators in comics. He opens his latest post on Substack by reflecting on the packed schedule ahead of him. Along with his vast collection of releases from Dark Horse Comics, BOOM! Studios, and Marvel, Cullen also has an ongoing Kickstarter campaign for Crooked Hills, his all-ages horror graphic novel. The project is in the last few days of its crowdfunding campaign, so support it while you still can if you’re a fan of Cullen’s work!

The creator also dropped a major announcement: his return to DC. “Batman / Superman: World's Finest 2024 Annual” will be the hit series’ first annual featuring a collection of top creators like Mark Waid, Dennis Culver, Jorge Fornés, and more. It’s refreshing to see the man most known for horror comics these days return to his love for superheroes.

One of the biggest news from the NYCC weekend was the announcement of Jason Aaron taking on a writing gig for the Man of Steel himself. Even with 20 years in the industry, Action Comics #1061 will be the first time Aaron pens a Superman comic. The writer reflects on the project in his latest Substack post, breaking down the direction of the upcoming story arc. He talks about how his involvement with Action Comics is part of “Superman Superstars.” The initiative involves bringing in top talent across comics to fill in for Phillip Kennedy Johnson after he wraps up his run with the beloved character. Aaron’s run will be three oversized issues long and explore a story about Supes’ strange doppelganger, Bizarro.

Jason Latour Previews Frisky Fox

Since first teasing his new comic titled “Frisky Fox: A Inside Job” in September, Jason Latour has steadily released updates for the project throughout October. His latest post is the finale of the series, featuring the 36-page comic in its entirety. The story is a fun romp about an anthropomorphic fox who just wants to snag some eggs for his own. It’s got the energy of a classic Warner Bros. cartoon with offbeat humor that ranges from slapstick to nihilistic. For a comic that’s so short and sweet, it is brimming with beautiful art and hilarious characters. Check it out if you love reading very inventive one-shots!

Since debuting their Subtack in January 2022, Brian K. Vaughn and Niko Henrichon have been one of the most consistent creators to follow on the platform. The team behind “Pride of Bagdad” uses the site to give readers updates on their latest collaboration, “The Spectators.” The new comic is planned to be a 300-page, self-contained story about sex and violence and why the world is so fixated on both. Now, on its 82nd update, the comic drops one very spicy cliffhanger.

If you’re interested in the previews of “The Spectators,” you’ll be happy to know that viewing is 100% free. But if you want to connect more with either Brian or Niko, then you can subscribe to the paid version of their newsletter and get greater access to community features and content. However much money you want to spend, there’s plenty of fun to be had on this Substack!
