Who is Adam Warlock?

Adam Warlock first appeared as "Him" in Fantastic Four #66-67 (1967), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Originally a genetically engineered being created by scientists known as the Enclave, he was designed to be the perfect human. However, realizing he was being controlled, he rebelled against his creators and set out on a journey of self-discovery.

It wasn’t until legendary writer Jim Starlin redefined him in the 1970s that Warlock became a cosmic messiah figure, destined to battle against the forces of chaos and order. Throughout his story, he has wielded the Soul Gem (later the Soul Stone), clashed with the tyrannical Magus (his dark alter ego), and played a key role in the Infinity Gauntlet saga against Thanos.

Character Lore

The Creation of Warlock

Adam Warlock was created in a scientific experiment to be the next step in human evolution. However, rejecting the control of his creators, he fled into the cosmos, eventually encountering the High Evolutionary, who bestowed upon him the name Warlock and gave him the Soul Gem.

Bearer of the Soul Gem

The Soul Gem allowed Adam to trap souls within a pocket dimension, where he could communicate with the lost spirits within. While it granted him great power, it also held a dark temptation, making him question his morality.

The Magus – His Darkest Enemy

Adam Warlock’s most terrifying foe isn’t Thanos or a cosmic entity—it’s himself. The Magus is Warlock’s future self, corrupted by absolute power and ruling over the universe as a tyrant. This realization leads Warlock into a desperate battle against his own fate, seeking to change destiny before he can become the Magus.

Infinity Gauntlet and Beyond

Adam Warlock played a critical role in stopping Thanos during Infinity Gauntlet (1991), proving to be one of the few beings capable of challenging the Mad Titan. Later, he took control of the Infinity Gauntlet himself, becoming a god-like being before splitting the gems among a group known as the Infinity Watch to prevent their abuse.

Throughout the years, Adam Warlock has continued to be a major player in Marvel’s cosmic events, from Infinity War to Annihilation: Conquest and beyond.

Adam Warlock’s Story in Marvel Rivals

Sensing a great dimensional disturbance, Adam Warlock instinctively retreated into a protective cocoon as the Timestream Entanglement unfolded. Drifting through the cosmos in this state, powerful entities visited him, warning of an encroaching darkness. First, Odin, trapped in an altered Asgard known as Yggsgard, revealed that Loki had upended his realm but warned of an even greater cosmic threat. Next, the panther goddess Bast of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda cryptically spoke of a looming feast, suggesting that something was consuming reality itself. Finally, a fallen Celestial confirmed Adam’s worst fears—an ancient force greater than even the Celestials had returned, leaving behind corruption that had already begun infecting divine beings across the Multiverse. Before Adam could fully comprehend the scale of the threat, a name echoed in his mind, carrying with it tendrils of pure darkness: Knull.

Drawn against his will toward a living, writhing world, Adam’s cocoon finally crashed onto Klyntar—the planet of the symbiotes and Knull’s long-dormant prison. As he broke free from his cocoon, he realized the gravity of his mission: Knull, the King in Black, was regaining strength, preparing to unleash his void upon all of existence. Adam had been summoned there not as prey but as a final challenge to the darkness itself.
