The Six Fingers #5 delivers a mind-bending finale that answers many questions about the series while leaving plenty up for interpretation. It’s one of those endings that will sit in your head well after you’ve turned the final page.

The dual narrative concept of The One Hand and The Six Fingers has been one of the most thrilling comic book reading experiences this year. In my review of The One Hand #5, I talked about how my excitement for the finale of the series was through the roof. With so many fascinating and strange ideas explored in the two stories, the burning question on my mind was: “How will this all tie together?” I’ve seen time and again stories having such incredible build-ups, only to fall short right at the finish line. But after reading the final issue, I’m glad to report that is far from the case. Curious to know more about it? Then keep on reading as I dive into my thoughts and full review of The Six Fingers #5!

Overview of The Six Fingers #5

Johannes Vale pieces together the truth behind The One Hand killings, the strange writings on the wall, and the city of Neo Novena. As it turns out, the last clue he needed comes in the form of someone who he believed to be long lost in his past. The gripping story then comes to a head when Detective Ari Nassar confronts Johannes just as he finishes his final kill. Together, they break down what both their lives mean in the grand scheme of things.

Review

After so many twists and turns throughout The One Hand and The Six Fingers, this final issue in the dual narrative series delivers the last pieces of the puzzle. With Detective Ari Nassar’s story ending on such an ominous note in The One Hand #5, I came into this comic fascinated to see how things end from Johannes’ perspective. Seeing him finally piece it all together makes for a satisfyingly haunting end as he breaks down the truth about himself and the city of Neo Novena itself. The final pages are especially jaw-dropping as they deliver arguably one of the series’ most shocking moments to cap off such an insane story. It’s the kind of ending that leaves you with plenty to unpack and interpret for yourself. Admittedly, I can’t even say I fully grasp everything about the ending myself. But I’m still enamored by the incredible storytelling of the issue. It gives me all the more reason to go back and read the entire series again with fresh eyes and a greater context of the bigger picture.

With such a wild story written by Dan Watters and Ram V., artist Sumit Kumar also pulled out all the stops for this last issue. The raw expressions on the different characters’ faces really elevate the story’s suspense. From the rage in Johannes’ eyes to the shock on Detective Ari Nassar’s face when he uncovers the truth, there are plenty of moments where the emotions are palpable on the page. Going back to the stories’ shocking conclusion, a word is hardly spoken as the events play out. Everything from the looks on the characters' faces to the way panels are framed all play into the masterful visual storytelling of the comic’s final moments. The Six Fingers along with The One Hand have the kind of story that will sit with you long after you turn the final page.

Final Thoughts

This series is just top-notch stuff from top to bottom. It’s a beautiful thing when stories as complex as The One Hand and The Six Fingers stick the landing. Considering the series has been among my favorite comics of the year, it was satisfying to see a finale be just as great as the incredible build-up. Together, the two books delivered a fascinating story centered on the horrors of existentialism that escalated with each new issue. Now that the series is finally complete, it’s safe to say that The Six Fingers and The One Hand are going to make one hell of a collected graphic novel later in the year. It’s a book that I can’t wait to add to my collection and carefully go through all the details again.

Why You Should Read The Six Fingers

  • When read in unison with The One Hand, the series makes a wild story filled with incredible mystery and suspense.
  • The final pages of the series will sit with you long after you finish the story.
  • There are plenty of layers to unpack about the story that make it satisfying to reread.
