Transformers #12 caps off the series' second arc with a perfect blend of high-stakes action and poignant character moments, solidifying this run as a defining chapter in Transformers lore.

Skybound's Transformers, helmed by the powerhouse team of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona, has consistently been one of my favorite comics over the last year. Each installment has been packed with so many exciting and jaw-dropping moments that I’m perplexed it’s only been running for twelve issues so far. Not only does it push the boundaries of how emotionally gripping a Transformers comic can be, but it’s also just a fantastic comic book that anyone can enjoy.

Now, how does the Transformers cap off its thrilling second story arc? Keep on reading for my full review!

Overview of Transformers #12

The Autobots make their play to stop the Decepticon’s plan to sap Earth of its Energon. But plans go awry when their trump card, Ultra Magnus, is nowhere to be seen. That leaves it up to Optimus to change plans and get his fellow Autobots back home safely. However, the Autobot leader has very tough choices as the battle on Earth hits a breaking point.

Review

With Transformers #12 marking the end of the series’ second story arc, this issue is pure action and excitement from start to finish. As I’ve said in my review of Ain’t No Grave #5, Jorge Corona is legitimately one of the most insane comic book artists working today. Not only is his art so stylish and dynamic, but his ability to put out so much great work on such a consistent basis is unmatched. This whole second story arc of Transformers has showcased how his unique artistry fits perfectly with the intense and flashy action of the series. Moments like Optimus facing off against Devastator deliver such intense, visceral action, making you want to shout “Hell yeah!” at the top of your lungs after every page. Corona’s ability to convey the massive scale of these battles, while making every movement feel kinetic and impactful, is nothing short of incredible.

But the series is more than just eye-popping visuals. Transformers continues to have my favorite version of Optimus Prime across all media. I'm constantly in awe at Daniel Warren Johnson's writing and how it peels back layers of the character, revealing a leader grappling with the weight of his decisions. While other characters have taken some of the spotlight recently, Transformers #12 reminds you why Optimus Prime is the heart of this story. Yet, Johnson also teases cracks in Optimus' armor, hinting at something big coming in the future.

With that said, this issue was simply a perfect ending to the series‘ second story arc. From all the high-octane action and strong character moments, the pacing of this issue is relentless. There is a stretch in the middle that hits readers with one shocking moment after another, creating an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you exhilarated by the end. But now that we’ve hit the halfway point of Daniel Warren Johnson’s incredible run on Transformers, I’m excited to see what the second half brings to the table. It’s been consistently impressive how the series manages always to one-up itself every time.

Final Thoughts

In case you already didn’t know, Transformers #12 is another prime example of why the series is one of the best ongoing comics right now. Johnson and Corona have masterfully blended pulse-pounding action with genuine emotional depth, crafting a Transformers story that goes beyond nostalgia. This issue not only wraps up the current arc in a satisfying way but also sets the stage for even greater things to come. So, be sure to have your seatbelts locked in because this wild ride of a series is only going to get crazier from here.

Why You Should Read Transformers
